Victory in Maine!!

Kennebec Journal reports:

The Maine Senate this morning passed a bill that would allow same-sex marriage in Maine. The Senate voted 20-15 in favor of the measure. Supporters say it would end discrimination against gays and lesbians and opponents say the proposal is an attack against the institution of marriage.
This morning’s vote means the bill has cleared its first hurdle in the Legislature. However, it still needs to pass through the House of the Representatives

Go Barney!

This is why I do what I do. Getting people from our community elected to public office puts a face to these laws that affect us. Having him in that room and able to give this speak to his colleagues really show the power behind having an LGBT person at the table making the decision.

House Passes Matthew Shepard Act

On Wednesday, the House of Representatives approved the addition of sexual orientation to the Federal Hate Crimes Bill. Also known as the Matthew Shepard Act, the addition was passed 249-175 over a series of Republican objections, including some that denied that Matthew Shepard's killing was actually a hate crime.

Go here to see how your representative voted. Did they vote the way you would have?

Adam almost got booted!

Scary!
I am gonna have to start voting again to make sure he doesn't end up there again.

Matthew Shepard Bill to be Voted on Tomorrow!!

I received this email written by NGLTF (National Gay & Lesbian Task Force)

I don't know if you've heard yet, but a comprehensive hate crimes bill (H.R. 1913) has passed the House Judiciary Committee and is about to come up to a vote in the full House of Representatives. I've joined with the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Action Fund to ask my representatives to pass this legislation without delay.

We've been trying for years to get hate crimes legislation passed -- and right now is our best opportunity to finally win. Will you please take just a few minutes to contact your representatives today and urge them to pass comprehensive federal hate crimes legislation?
http://www.kintera.org/site/lookup.asp?c=grLKK1PHLqF&b=5117035

Every hour, every day, at least one hate crime offense is committed somewhere in the United States. Of those attacked, it's estimated that at least 15% of hate crimes are related to a person's perceived or actual sexual orientation or gender identity. But the biggest crime here is that this very same legislation that would help protect the most vulnerable communities affected by hate crimes has been before Congress many times, yet we've never seen it become law.

Please, take action right now to help us make sure that this time, our legislators hear us loud and clear and pass federal hate crimes legislation.

My Apologies

I have been real sick these last couple of days and have not had a chance to do any postings. I will be catching up later on today. Thanks!

Gay Word of the Day

The Gay bomb is an informal name for a theoretical non-lethal chemical weapon, which a US Air Force research laboratory speculated about producing. The possibility was canvassed that a strong aphrodisiac could be dropped on enemy troops, ideally one which would also cause "homosexual behavior". The documents described the aphrodisiac weapon as "distasteful but completely non-lethal." Wright Laboratory won the 2007 Ig Nobel Peace Prize for "instigating research & development on a chemical weapon—the so-called 'gay bomb' / 'poof bomb' —that will make enemy soldiers become sexually irresistible to each other."

When will it End?!

On Thursday afternoon, after returning home from school, fifth-grader Jaheem quietly went into his room and hanged himself. His 10-year-old sister, Yerralis, also a fifth-grader, discovered Jaheem’s dead body.
Jaheem was bullied relentlessly, his family said. Keene said the family knew the boy was a target, but until his death they didn’t understand the scope.

WHEN IS THIS GOING TO STOP!
When will schools and communities and people realize that children are committing SUICIDE because teachers and youth workers are "keeping to their faith" and not stopping punk ass little fuckers from teasing other students. I mean I am absolutely positive if a student was bullying another student using offensive racial or gender based slurs that student would be suspended/reprimanded for their actions. However, when these comments are homophobic and considered to be used too often to catch every student using them then it is OK for teachers not to take action. So because it would be TOO HARD to make students stop using the words gay and fag we are just going to let the LGBT youth affected by this bare the burden and have to deal with it. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!
HOW MANY MORE LGBT YOUTH HAVE TO TAKE THEIR OWN LIVES BEFORE SOMEONE IN POWER GETS OFF THEIR ASSES AND DOES SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

Gay Word of the Day

Twink: is a term used among gay & bisexual males to describe young men in their late teens or early twenties who are slim and have little to no body hair. The term originates from the snack food twinkie, which is tanned on the outside and has cream filling. The connotation was that "twinks" are delicious, but have little substance and are not considered for long-term relationships. The term can be used pejoratively in the gay community but is mostly a neutral term used for identification purposes.

If you don't know her... you should

Christine Quinn, openly lesbian New York City Council Speaker, gave a tremendously touching and powerful speech at a press conference last week. I had the privilege of seeing how truly amazing she is this past Sunday. She was one of the speakers for the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund's 9th Annual Champagne Brunch and did an incredible job resulting in an overwhelming number of generous donations by the over 600 attendees.

I know that this applies to some of you out there today...
